Aparigraha: Practicing Non-attachment During Uncertainty

Christa Hogan | NOV 26, 2024

"We'll see." Lately, as I talk about plans and future events, I've caught myself saying this phrase a lot. Then I started noticing other people saying it too: "We'll see." And I realized--Oh, this is the language of uncertain times.

But is it really so bad during uncertainty to take a wait-and-see approach? What do we really mean when we say, "We'll see"?

"We'll see" may sound defeatist, short-hand for, "Not gonna happen, so why bother hoping."

It could be the language of past hurts and disappointment. As in, "She says she's going to change, but..."

Or it could be a way of avoiding having to take action. "Things are really bad at this job, but..."

"We'll see" can also be hopeful though. When we've done all we can to reach our goals and shape our world, "We'll see" can help us let go of results and expectations. In yoga, we call this aparigraha or non-attachment.

Practicing non-attachment helps us:

  • let go of difficult emotions like disappointment, hurt, and anger
  • release attachment to outcomes beyond our control
  • surrender the hustle and avoid the associated burnout
  • accept people and situations as they truly are and not just as we wish them to be.

Viewed through the lens of aparigraha, the phrase, "We'll see," indicates that you're letting go of the end result--whether it's a job promotion or a peak yoga posture. Letting go doesn't have to mean giving up though.

When we practice acceptance around what's beyond our control, we're free to focus our energy on what is--mainly our own thoughts, words, and actions. And that's where the real work often lies.

So how about you? Where can you practice aparigraha in your creative, personal, and professional life? Have you done what you can to create a desired outcome? Then practice non-attachment and... you'll see.
