Best Props and Supplies for Yoga @ Home (and common household substitutes that won't cost you a penny)

props

Getting started in yoga doesn't have to be expensive or complicated! You can begin with nothing more than a non-slip yoga mat and a clear space in your living room. However, props can offer support and the ability to more fully relax into a pose, so I suggest them often in class. Here are my favorites and substitutions using common household items.

YOGA PROPS AND SUPPLIES

Below you'll find a list of common yoga props and self-massage supplies, which you can purchase on Amazon through my affiliate links (*see below). You can find comparable items at your local Wal-Mart, Target, Five Below, and stores like HomeGoods and Marshal’s (though they won't necessarily be of the same quality or less expensive).

There are three approaches here. Start with the basics--a mat and a pair of blocks--and add over time. Or purchase it all at once and save with a bundle. Or use what you have around the house instead.

Once you have these items, you can use them for years and years (unless your puppy eats them, which has happened). I have the same mat I started with in college and the foam blocks (minus a few bite marks), blanket, and bolster from my Yoga Teacher Training days.

Yoga Starter Pack with bolster, microfibre blanket (if you tend to get sweaty), extra microfibre towel, D-ring strap, and 2 foam blocks. If you order a different set, make sure it includes 2 blocks and not 1.

—OR—use a stack of pillows for a bolster, towels, a belt for the strap, and two books for the blocks.

Yoga sarape blanket --OR--any weightier blanket with a non-slippery feel

Standard mat for gentle yoga and flow classes

Thicker mat for Yin, nidra, restorative classes, and achey knees --OR-- add blankets, practice over carpet

SELF-MASSAGE SUPPLIES

Self-massage Starter Kit All you need in one handy package: Hollow Core Massage Roller with End Caps, Muscle Roller Stick, Stretching Strap, Double Lacrosse Peanut, Spikey Plantar Fasciitis Ball. See individual household substitutions below.

Massage balls set with bag —OR— Pinky balls or tennis balls, 2 tied loosely inside a dress or athletic sock

Trigger point massage ball —OR— a lacrosse ball

Foam roller —OR— a large, firm reusable water bottle

Muscle roller —OR— a broomstick handle or rolling pin with rotating handle

*I'm an Amazon affiliate. You won't pay any more for purchasing these items through this link, but I receive a commission from Amazon for each purchase you make. Most of these items I use for my own practice. If you aren't satisfied with any product, you can return them to Amazon. I'd also appreciate hearing your feedback, so I can improve suggestions for future students. Thanks!
