Our lives speak to us most clearly through our bodies. Lately, I’ve been more intentional about checking in with mine. Not only when I’m sitting on my meditation cushion or yoga mat, but in the middle of ordinary moments like checking email, walking my dog, and doing dishes.

I’m noticing sensations like tension or aches, but also really listening. What am I feeling right now? Does this activity bring me joy, contentment, or satisfaction? Or is it stealing vital energy I could spend more wisely elsewhere? What does my body need next?

When we pause and tune inward, the body responds. We may feel tight and anxious, or excited and eager. Headaches, racing heart, sweaty palms, hunger, weariness—these are all important cues. Learning to listen and interpret those cues, and to trust the wisdom they have to offer, can take practice. We call this practice embodiment.

Embodiment directs non-judgmental awareness to the body. We shift from an analytical, critical mindset to one of curiosity and reflection. Web build a relationship of trust and understanding with our bodies that provides a reliable compass for big and small choices.

Embodiment also helps us avoid the trap of overthinking, ruminating, analyzing, and obsessing. Instead, it gives us more actionable, immediate data. “This feels like I’m on the right path,” “Something’s not quite right here,” “This feels like a familiar pattern I’ve been repeating,” are all messages worth paying attention to.

Journaling and creative expression are also valuable embodiment tools. You can write about a sensation, deepening the conversation with yourself. Sketch, paint, or collage what you’re feeling, and reflect on the wisdom of the images created. Creativity makes the inner world visible and more tangible. We can translate sensation into meaning without rushing to fix anything.

As I pay closer attention when my body speaks, I’m noticing small shifts. I catch myself when I’m spiraling into thought and can redirect. I see the subtle habits that add unnecessary pressure, like squeezing in one more task before I walk out the door. And I can use my daily journaling practice to sit with discomfort and process it long enough to choose a wiser response. These small changes add up to more energy for creating, adventure, relationships, and caregiving—things I highly value.

This weekend, as Valentine’s Day approaches, offer yourself the gift of embodiment. Place a hand on your chest and ask, “What do you need today?” Then, listen. Reflect. Write. Draw. Paint. And let the wisdom of the body shape where you go next.
