HSP Resilience Through Mindful Art + Yoga

Christa Hogan | APR 7, 2024

Many of my students identify as highly sensitive persons (HSPs). Others experience symptoms of being an HSP without realizing it. HSPs tend to get easily overwhelmed. Our nervous systems can get short circuited by daily, modern life. We may feel ashamed of being so sensitive, most often because we've been told something is wrong with us! HSPs can also feel limited, as if there's an invisible wall between us and our dreams and goals.

As an HSP myself, I thought I was just introverted for many years. I coped with a stressed nervous system by trying to "toughen up," which only shut me down. Or I avoided certain experiences and people to prevent burn out. I felt let down by my body time and again.

As I've worked with therapists trained to help HSPs and developed more mindfulness through yoga, meditation, and the expressive arts, I've found an appreciation for my sensitive system and a gentler, more nuanced approach to self-care. I feel more empowered and energized, less limited, and more resilient than ever. I literally could not be where I am today without what I've learned.

Now one of my missions as a yoga and mindful art teacher is to help my students build their own self-awareness and resilience through mindfulness practices. I lead retreats that combine yoga, meditation, and mindful creative expression within a trauma-informed container. These techniques help students manage stress and develop habits that support their nervous systems, which may be highly sensitive, so they can live more joyful, empowered, and creative lives.
