What Is Mindful Creativity?

What Is Mindful Creativity?

Mindful creativity is the practice of creative expression as a meditation. It is also a form of self-care.

In a mindful creative practice we aren't worried about copying a teacher, learning a technical skill, or producing a specific outcome. Instead, we're focused on being present and learning (or remembering) to find joy in the creative process itself.

In my mindful creativity classes, students:

  • Remember to breathe.
  • Notice where they hold tension.
  • Recognize and hold space for self-criticism, perfectionism, and judgment, so they can let it go.
  • Observe their thoughts as they wander.
  • Explore, experiment, and play.
  • Release stress.
  • Express experiences, thoughts, and emotions.
  • Get breakthroughs and fresh perspectives.
  • Have fun!

Who Is It For?

Mindful creative expression can be a fun and useful form of self-care whether you're a seasoned or professional artist or writer, a crafter, maker, hobbyist, creatively curious, or a self-proclaimed (un)creative. No experience with or training in art or writing is necessary!

Like yoga, you will get the most out of mindful creativity if you come to it with a curious and open mind and have patience and compassion for yourself.

Okay, But WHAT Is It?

Mindful creative expression can come in many forms. In my classes I typically teach:

  • watercolors
  • drawing
  • coloring
  • collage
  • reflective writing
  • free writing
  • nature journaling

I often pair meditation and movement like yoga with mindful creativity, because I am a yoga teacher. But also I find it helps students settle in, calm racing thoughts, get out of unhelpful tension patterns, and find rest.

Here are a few examples of mindful art projects I've done or taught in the past few years...

Is Mindful Creativity for You?

Mindful creativity is not about creating a "perfect" result but relaxing into creative flow and following your muse, wherever she may take you.

Also like yoga, the best way to discover if mindful creativity is a good fit for you is to give it a try. Here are a few ways you can explore mindful creativity with me:
