"Desire," collage by Christa Hogan

On March 3, I'm hosting a day-long yoga and mindful art journaling retreat called, Sankalpa: Living with Heartfelt Intention. You may or may not be familiar with the term, pronounced san-kul-puh. It's a Sanskrit word often used by yoga teachers to invite students to set a heartfelt intention for their practice. The intention is usually stated in an affirmation or mantra. But sankalpa is more than wishful thinking.

The prefix "sa" indicates purity, something in its highest form, and "kalpa" is a rule or value that comes from the heart and guides all other choices. So we define "sankalpa" as. . .

A determined resolve that reflects our deepest desires

to evolve toward our highest selves.

In a world of never-ending options, a sankalpa can bring focus and wisdom to our choices, from who to date, which projects to take on, how we parent, or when it's time to let go. The specific resolution can change over time, but a sankalpa is always pointing us home, to our best selves.

Learning how to recognize your heartfelt desires (which we're taught to repress) and express them authentically, however, can take practice, courage, and community. Likewise with knowing how to implement sankalpa in your daily life.

Together, at our March retreat, we'll use yoga, Reiki, mindful art journaling, and meditation to help us on this journey. We'll also have a lot of fun doing it. Whether you're new to these practices or an experienced pro, I hope you'll join us!

Registration for Sankalpa: Living with Heartfelt Intention is now open. Use code SPRING25 to save $25 now through February 16th. Spots are limited so register today!
